Air travel up in 2002 Global air traffic has increased slightly in 2002 over 2001, but remained below the level of the year before the September 11 attacks, the International Civil Aviation Organization said last week. In its annual review of scheduled traffic for the world's airlines, the U.N. agency said preliminary figures indicated a 2 percent increase in ton-kilometers performed this year over 2001. The total is still more than 2 percent below the 2000 level, according to the statistics supplied by ICAO's 188 member states. A ton-kilometer is a combined measure of passenger, freight and mail traffic that also takes into account distance flown. The 2002 figure is just under 400 billion. The biggest increases were made by airlines in Asia and the Middle East, while U.S. airlines had the biggest reductions in traffic, according to the agency.
