Can't we all Just Get Along? - 04/00

Four major airlines said they are investigating ways to fortify cockpit doors on hundreds of jets following an assault last week in which an intruder nearly reached an airplane's controls. American, Alaska, Northwest and Delta airlines say they will search for measures to strengthen the folding doors to the cockpits of MD-80 and DC-9 jets in response to one of two air rage incidents on major airlines recently. Peter Bradley, 39, of Blue Springs, Mo., denied bail by a federal magistrate, is charged with interfering with a flight crew. The 6-foot-2, 250-pound carpenter allegedly threw his shoulder against the locked cockpit door and broke it open. The incident happened on an Alaska Airlines MD-80 flying from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, to San Francisco. He shouted, ''I'm going to kill you!'' and grabbed for the pilot's arm, causing the plane to dip, witnesses said. The co-pilot forced Bradley back with a fire ax as seven passengers subdued him. The incident prompted a review by airlines into the design of the jets' inch-thick doors, which are made of a fireproof synthetic honeycomb material faced with aluminum.
