Grand Canyon Rim Will Soon Reopen

By early May, you'll once again be able to drive to the Grand Canyon's Yavapai Point for the timeless view. The road was closed to cars in October when a shuttle bus system began carting visitors to the brand-new Canyon View Information Plaza. Eliminating cars was also an effort to keep pedestrian walkways to the nearby Mather Point overlook safe.

Unfortunately, car traffic was diverted to other routes, which in turn became more congested than park officials predicted. Traffic jams, combined with travelers' complaints, led to the decision to reopen the road to individual vehicles on a temporary basis.  New lights and signage will be installed to control the heavily traveled area.
