Hotels Are Guest Hunting With Deals

The hotel industry, struggling with both recession and terrorism, is guest-hunting these days with deals, giveaways and new services. Hotel revenues are running about 15 percent lower than they were a year ago, in a travel business hit hard by the Sept. 11 attacks. Nor does the near-term future look bright, especially given that the year-end holiday season is traditionally a slow one. It’s not surprising then that hotel operators are using e-mail, Web sites and mail directed to offer bargains to business travelers and other frequent fliers, with many of the offers running through February 2002. Guests who stay at Hilton, Doubletree, Hilton Garden Inn and Conrad hotels for three consecutive nights starting on a weekend night — a Friday, Saturday or Sunday — will stay on that Sunday for free. The offer is good until February 28. Marriott says it has reduced rates by as much as 40 percent at 1,500 U.S. hotels — brands that include Residence Inn, Courtyard, Fairfield Inn and others — through the end of January. In addition guests who pay with a Visa card have a chance to win one of five trips to the Winter Olympic Games in Utah. Also through February 28 members of Hyatt’s Gold Passport program earn a free night for every three night stayed.
